Seaweed Farmers at Pandawa Beach
PANDAWA BEACH,-Seaweed farmers in Pandawa Beach, Badung regency, Bali, harvest failure after their seaweed is eaten by herd tawa fish or baronang.
“It’s been a month that there’s no longer seaweed,” said Made Nomer (60), seaweed farmers of Pandavas Beach, Kutuh Indigenous Village, South Kuta district, Badung regency.
Seaweed farmers on the
south coast of Bali were restless because they cannot harvest their commodity.
“Though these months seaweed season,” said Wayan Resta, seaweed farmers from another Pandawa Beach added.
Seaweed prices at the farm level were currently good, which is in the range of Rp13.000 per kilogram. In the earlier days were always under Rp10.000 per kilogram.
Pandavas beach is the largest producer of seaweed “cottonii” in addition to the island of Nusa Lembongan Bali, Klungkung regency, which are exported to several countries.
Made and Wayan Number Resta said that their plants are destroyed by fish at the age of 15 days. Pandawa Beach farmers usually harvest seaweed when it has reached the age of 35-40 days.
“ Seaweed land here is fertile. Every thousand iris seedlings could produce 200 kilograms,” said Made Number who own 1 hectare of seaweed land area.
According to him, this time the board of Farmers Group Sari Segara who oversees the seaweed farmers in Kutuh Beach is requesting seeds to the Badung regency.
“When they get seed, the farmers here will be fenced the seaweed land with a net that cannot be penetrated tawa fish,” he said.
In addition to farming activities, lands on Pandawa beach also become a tourist attraction. Even the Indonesian Seaweed Association (Arli) has been set as the Pandawa Beach attractions seaweed as coastal preservation efforts.
In 21st International Symposium Seaweed (International Seaweed Symposium / ISS) in Nusa Dua, Badung regency on April 21 to 26, 2013, delegates from 50 countries attended the activity of seaweed farmers on the Pandawas beach.
